Legendary Atlanta Station is 3rd Quarter Feature Display
WFOX FM was acquired by Shamrock Broadcasting in 1984. The station is licensed to Gainesville, Georgia. However, has one of the best signals in the state and blanketed the Atlanta market. In 1989 Shamrock saw a format void in the Atlanta market and launched an oldies format. Fox quickly became a market favorite with listeners. The station hired Randy Cook and Spiff Carner to do morning and invested heavily in television commercial including “Pay Every Listener” and “We’ll Do Anything to Get Listeners”. Watch samples here. The station acquired and refurbished a commercial box truck complete with a mobile studio and sound system. The vehicle was name “Van Go”.
The single biggest promotion the station ever did was The Ultimate Oldies Concerts. Beginning in 1990, they were held at Atlanta Fulton County Stadium and featured acts which had been popular in the 60’s and 70’s. Peter Noone (lead singer of Herman’s Hermits), The Monkees, Ben E. King, Creedance Clearwater Revival, and the Young Rascals. The event moved to the Georgia Dome where it stayed until 2001 when the owners decided the promotion was too costly.
The station changed hands several time, but the listeners kept on listening until around 2000 when Cox Broadcasting purchased the station and sent in consultants and several managers and program directors. After three years of tinkering the formally successful format was changed.
The Fox 97 display features a huge collection of promotion items donated to the Georgia Radio Museum by former Fox 97 promotion director Tim Johnson
